Oct 1st and Oct 2nd - Loyola Univ. Ball Kids and Free GameIf your family is interested in watching soccer played at a college level, Loyola University Soccer Games are free to attend.     The game times are below for this weekend and the Loyola Ramblers Teams are looking for ball kids !     If you show up 30-60 minutes before game time, you'll see how these college soccer players warm up with the same soccer practice games that you use at your practices...

Loyola University Soccer Program is looking for 10 youth players from AYSO Region 183 U08, U10, U12 or U14 Divisions to participate as ball kids on Oct 1st (Saturday) and Oct 2nd (Sunday). The game is located at the Loyola University Soccer Field (Devon / Hoyne).

Sun 10/2 1pm Women's Soccer Game vs. Indiana State

This event is a great opportunity for families to see a free college game close up and youth players can participate on the field as a ball kid.     Please plan on arriving 30-45 minutes before game time to participate.

Oct 8th - AYSO Region 183 Picture DayReminder to everyone that picture day is Oct 8th.    The schedule and location for picture day will be announced soon. However please keep in mind that team pictures will be taken at least 1 hour before your team's game time. So please plan ahead.

Coaches and Team Parents will be handing out the picture order forms starting at Sept 24th.     Please be sure that you review the picture order form.

Please note. If you'd like to receive photos, please place an order.

This picture program is pre-pay.   Payment is due on October 8th with the signed form with package choice(s). Popular packages range from $14 to $46.   You are no obligation to purchase a package. However, only those individuals who have made payment will receive orders. Packages purchased after picture day will incur service charges.

You must bring the completed order form to picture day (October 8th).

Coach Handbook
At our Preseason Meetings, I handed out the AYSO Region Coach Handbook. If you did not get a copy, please let me know.    The Coach Handbook is a great tool for you to use and in addition there are AYSO Coach guidelines that we must follow.     For those of you who are not familiar with the contents of the handbook, please spend sometime for review.

Green Folder & Player Forms
As required by AYSO National Regulations, all coaches are to have the player forms present at training sessions or games.    At team uniform distribution, we handed out these player forms in our Regional AYSO 183 Green Folder.     Please be sure that you have these forms available in your coach / sports bag.    From time to time our staff will at fields on game days doing spot checks.     By regulation, if the form is not present the player is not able to participate.

Safe Haven Certification and Coach Certification
We are not at 100% AYSO Safe Haven(ed) certified in our region.   Our goal as a region is that all volunteers must be Safe Haven Certified.   The importance of being Safe Haven certified is that is important you as a volunteer knows what's important for our youth players and volunteers in AYSO in terms of having a Fun and Safe environment.

Some of coaches had taken Safe Haven Coaches a few years ago when their children started in AYSO.    I would highly suggest that coaches that a refresher course online and re-certify.

All volunteers are welcome to certify and/or re-certify AYSO Safe Haven thru online training which is about 1.5 - 2.0 hours.    In order to complete the online training, you'll need to go to eAYSO and find your AYSO ID.   Then go to AYSO Training at http://www.aysotraining.org to complete the AYSO Safe Haven under Management courses.

There are also online-Coach Courses to complete at U06, U08 and U10.    All coaches must also have completed online training if they did not attend an in-person course. Coaches who complete the in-person course, should also attend a in-person coach clinic when available.    Online course training only gets you so far.

As of July 1st, 2011 - AYSO had mandated that all new volunteers complete AYSO Safe Haven and existing volunteers are welcome to complete the new AYSO Safe Haven Course.

If you have not completed AYSO Safe Haven, you are required to complete this within 10 days.     For those volunteers that would like to complete the course with in-person instruction please let me know.     I will need to schedule in some time to train volunteers AYSO Safe Haven with in person class.

CATZ Coach Accounts
Upon completion of AYSO Safe Haven and at least one of the three - U06, U08 and U10 Coach Certification courses, then you'll get access to our specialized AYSO Coach Training Video Web Site by CATZ Coach.   At this web site, you'll be able to learn more as to how to run training sessions by watching videos and having access to practice plans.      We are working with CATZ Coach and we'll be sending out more information about access at a later time.

Balanced Teams and Good Sportsmanship
As stated in our preseason coaches meeting and its also listed in the Coach Handbook,   any game that has a run up of the score where the score differential is +4 (ie. for example 4-0, 5-1, 8-0, 10-1, etc.)    Coaches will be reminded by the referee or field monitor to rebalance the team with lineup change at quarter break.   I will also suggest that as a coach that if you are at +3, your game can quickly be +5 for which your opponent may lose confidence very quickly.

Try new challenges to the team such as "try 3 passes in the defending 1/3 of the field, 3 passes on the right side, then 3 passes on the left side." or "every one must pass to each other 2 times before you try to score" or "every player must touch the ball 3 times before passing to another".     These challenges must be presented in your training sessions so that players know what it means when in game.

I will direct that both coaches from both teams work together on improving the outcome of the game for both teams.

The Technical Area
How many of us know what the "Technical Area" is?   How many of us stay in the area during the entire game?   The Technical Area is an area which is know to us in Region 183 as the Coaches Side which is one side of the touch line. In fact, the Technical Area is about 5-10 feet long from the middle of the field extending for both teams.     Only players and coaches are to be on this side while the other side of field (other touchline) is the area for Fans.    Therefore, you as the coach should not be running up and down the touchline from corner flag to corner flag.    Please say within the middle third area of the field.

During the game from the top of the hour thru the end of your session, no coach is to leave the "Technical Area" while the game is in session.   This includes any stoppage such as direct kick, penalty kick, or even a goal when scored.   Coaches and Players on the side (resting) are not allowed to enter the field of play unless approved by the Referee.

By the way, when an injury on the field occurs; the referee will blow the whistle.   All players are to stop; and the player will be first be checked by the referee.    No parent is to walk on the field until the referee asks.    The referee will first ask for the coach before the parent.   The coach and referee may then ask for help from the parent.

Also as a reminder, no parent, fan, player, coach or anyone should be behind or next to the goal.

U06 and U08 Training and Game
As a reminder, the U06 Division plays 3 v 3.   If you do increase the numbers for from 3 v 3 to 4 v 4 or 5 v 5, you'll tend to see aggressive play and that there are additional feet on the field which reduces touches between players.    We as coaches need to increase the number of touches and be sure that we stay within our guideline with regards to short-sided play at U06 and U08.

At the U08 Level, the game is played 5 v 5 with good reason.   The larger field of play is meant to increase the players mobility by working in width and depth.   The player with the ball is penetrating, so you'll need to work in concepts of sharing the field and working together with players that are not on the ball.   U08 Coaches should review their manuals to find games that work-in skill (theme) of attacking with dribbling and passing.

What's a touch?
A touch on the ball is actually the movement of the foot with the ball. A good first touch is control of the ball with the instep or outstep where the ball is still infront of the player.    A bad touch is a touch where the player immediately reacts to the ball and kicks it back!   If a player kicks it back to the other team, parents say "Good Kick!".    No! Ensure that the players keep possession of the ball and works on that first touch; and then second touch; and then third touch.

Game Card Management

Game Card Management
All coaches are required to complete game cards for each game.

Game Card in Coach Packet
When you opened your coach packet from the Uniform Distribution, you will notice game cards in the envelope. Game cards are used to help track your players on and off the field during the game.

If you need more game cards, please stop by the AYSO Staff Picnic Table at the Peterson Park South Fields (near the field house) on Saturdays from 9am-1pm.

Pre-Fill Game Cards
My recommendation is to pre-fill 2 game cards before Saturday (Game Day). The card should list all players on your entire team roster. You should fill out a few cards at a time.

I would also keep a second roster cards during the game and here is why:

The referee will ask for a card at the start of the game.
Keeping an extra copy of the game card will help you remember who played in and out for this week based on rotation for the next week. This will help you work the rotation of players between different positions.
We have some AYSO coaches that have great player rotation systems that they have used on their own. I welcome any coach to offer their system of rotation to new coaches! Please email me. We can use you as a great example ;-)
Your second copy will be used to guide you keeping track of players play from week to week.
During the game, ask your Assistant Coach or Team Parent to help keep track of players on the secondary sheet.
If a referee did not take your game card, please bring the game card to the AYSO Picnic Table at the Peterson Park South Fields (next to the field house) anytime on Saturday Game Day. (or) bring these to the Coach Admin Meetings.

Game Card Sheet Online
Here is a good tool on the Internet. AYSO has provided the Game Cards in print out format. I’ve used this format at my second roster card during the game to help me keep track of players.

By filling the game card thru your web/browser, you are then able to print out 1 sheet with 4 game cards. You should print out multiple copies.

Marking the Game Card
As instructed on the game card, the card states that for each quarter, you mark down who has not played. Therefore you’ll just need to mark down who is not on the field.

Rotation Method: Some coaches use a pre-planned rotation per quarter to help them manage and ensuring players play most of the game. In addition, the rotation concept gives the players freedom to try different positions on the field.

Coaches can ask parents regarding availability from week to week so that the lineup card and roster rotations are planned and/or kept in mind for you.

For example, one player might have been sick the week before or another did not get to play 3/4 of game. You would like to be sure that everyone has a chance to play. You should be sure that those players who played less then previous week, get more playing time the next time.
Also players who don't show to practice does not have a direct effect to playing on Saturday. For example, a player may not be able to a practice with your team due to family event, but does show on Saturday.

Coaches should consider rotating the goalie by quarter and ensure that everyone on the team plays goalie at least few times a season. In higher age-divisions, you may get some players who wish to specialize in goalie. In that case as always encourage teammates to help by being a goalie as well so that everyone has time on the field.

Here we have demonstrated the AYSO philosophies of "Everyone Plays" and "Balanced Teams".

Coach #1
I prepare a lineup, by quarter, on a sheet of paper on Thursday or Friday. I usually decide who my keepers are going to be by Tuesday, so we can work with them at practice.

I give a copy to my assistant coach, who sets up the defense while I set up the mids and forwards.

This does two things -- it reduces the delay between quarters, and keeps the coach from being besieged by people yelling "I wanna play this!" or "I don't wanna play that!"

The coach needs good attendance info from his/her players' parents, of course, in order to make this work well.

Soccer Fest Fun- June 11th

We are hear to celebrate the year-end of playing soccer at AYSO Region 183. Our celebration is a fun-filled day with food, fun and soccer games. All teams are scheduled to play 2 short-sided soccer games. We'll have some fun activities such as inflatable attractions. In addition, players will receive a trophy and a meal ticket.

Soccer Fest Volunteers

We ask for your help. Our Soccer Fest would not be a success without the volunteers that help support the region. We do have a need for volunteers to help out with cooking, serving, chair and table setup / take down, and goal setup / take down, organizing and clean up of the picnic area.

Soccer Fest Parking

Parking can be found at North Park Village and Peterson Park Parking Lots. However please do not park in the circle / turn-around area just beyond the Peterson Park field house. If you do park at this location, you'll receive a parking ticket and a no parking sticker on your car window.

You can also find parking on Central Park Ave on the Peterson Park side and right hand side of the street.

Trophy Distribution and Official Coach Sign-Off

As an offiical AYSO Coach, you are required to sign-out for your trophies and meal ticket distribution. Our volunteers will ask for your to sign and confirm the number of players on your team. You as the coach or assistant coach must sign out since your team roster sheet at the table.

Meal Ticket Distribution and Official Coach Sign-Off

As an official AYSO Coach, you are required to sign-out for meal tickets. You'll get 1 ticket per player and a ticket per coach that is registered as a volunteer. The meal will be hot dog or hamburger, chips, and drink.

Player Registration Reminder ( LAST DAY )

We've mentioned this many times this season. There will be a wait list starting on Sunday June 12th. Please mention to your players and parents, that Soccer Fest marks the last day of registration for the Fall / Spring 2011-12 Seasons.

Referee Registration

Our Region is growing and our Referee staff needs help. We encourage parents who are interested in learning the game from a different perspective (not as coach or player), to become a referee. All parents who've become Referees in youth soccer find it a very rewarding experience and challenging. Fan, Coaches, Players give the up most respect to all Referees in AYSO 183.

Notes for the May 20th.

Quick Reminder: NO Games on Saturday May 28th - Memorial Day Weekend

1. No Baseball Shoes: We have had a few times that our Referees have encountered players wearing Baseball Cleats or Baseball Shoes. There is a cleat / spike at the front of these shoes that do not meet national regulations for playing soccer. The front cleat spike is actually very dangerous when players are using this shoe. The spike can hurt the players, referee or fans sitting on the side.

Coaches you are responsible for informing players and parents to wear soccer shoes at our games. If a player shows up with baseball shoes they will be asked not to play unless they change out to regular gym shoes or soccer shoes.

2. No Jewelry, Watches, Glasses etc. Any item that is worn as a display item such as a watch, hard-glasses, earing, ring, bracelet, necklace, or a baseball type hat with a hard bill, the player will be asked to remove the item and hand the item to the parent or coach. Again, we have had a few occurrences. These items are not to be covered with a shirt, sock, or even tape. If the player does not remove these items, the player will be asked not to play until such items are removed.

3. Goal Safety: All coaches and team parents are responsible to ensure that goals are safely secured with spikes to the ground. Referees will check as well. Players are not to play around the goal of the goal is not secured. Players are not to hang from the goal post for example doing pull ups, etc. In fact, while the goal is being setup please be sure that players are warming up away from the goal area.

4. Good Sportsmanhip: We have had a few occurrences where a "red cards" were issued to players in our region regarding inappropriate / foul language used during the game. When the red card is issued, the player is removed from the game and also cannot play the next scheduled game. Foul language shouldn't be used anyways whether its on or off the field by or players, fans, parents, coaches, referees or staff volunteer.

Good Sportsmanship is an AYSO philosophy that we stand by. We strive to create a positive environment based on mutual respect rather than a win-at-all-costs attitude, and our program is designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of AYSO.

5. Callling All Returning Coaches

Just as a reminder, if you are returning as a coach for next season. Please stop by the Peterson Park South Fields

on Saturdays between 9am-12pm to resign your pre-preprinted volunteer form. As always, we do need all coaches to return as our organization will increase. We are predicting more than 25% growth.

We ask that you do this as soon as possible on May 21st, June 4th and / or June 11th

Here is the challenge for us. If we don't get enough coaches, teams will increase in size. Players will have less opportunity to touch the ball on the playing field during a game. Thus the fabulous bee line goes into effect !

6. New Volunteers - We need Referees and Assistant Coaches / Lead Coaches

Coaches, by now you may have an interested parent on the sideline stepping up to help you as an assistant coach or might be more active on the sidelines. As we close the season, now is a great opportunity to speak with your player parents to volunteer with us at AYSO Region 183.

We always have needs for coaches and referees. In fact, we do need more referees as our organization grows. As our organization grows the more games we'll be having. The more games, the need for more referees.

Referee training is free. Refereeing always give that "active parent" a different perspective of the game.

7. Soccer Fest - June 11th - Saturday

Soccer Fest is Saturday June 11th at the Peterson Park South Fields. All AYSO Region 183 Teams will be participating in a soccer festival where each team will play 2 short-sided games. (ie 5 v 5).

The day is a celebration to the end of our year in soccer with AYSO with fun and food. This is a great event for our region and many families enjoy the day. The success of this event is support by our volunteers and team parents.

We do need more volunteers to help support the day. Arlene Zoller is our Soccer Fest coordinator and will be happy to provide more details for volunteering help such as trophy distribution, food serving, setup and cleanup. We'll need as many volunteers that can help with this fun event.

I will need your response by Monday May 9th at 6:00pm.

Your response will need to state if you would like to take your team to participate in a Area Fest hosted by multiple AYSO regions in our area.

We will need responses now, since we are meeting on Monday May 9th at 7:00pm with the Area Fest organizers so that we can provide a final list of teams representing our Region.

Area Fest is a day soccer festival where our youth players play soccer with other teams in the AYSO Area. This is where your team gets to play multiple games against teams from other AYSO Regions. Historically, each team has played 3 games Area Fest. So for example, your team might play 1 game vs. Skokie AYSO, 1 game vs. Highland Park AYSO, and 1 game vs. Deerfield AYSO.

Wait isn't this Soccer Fest?

No. Our region hosts Soccer Fest for our own youth teams on Saturday. This year we are planning for June 11th 2011. Area Fest is another event.

When is Area Fest?

Area Fest is on June 5th 2011 Sunday.

Where will Area Fest be held?

Each Region takes on a division. For example, Skokie AYSO might host U10 Boys and U12 Girls. While Highland Park AYSO hosts U10 Girls, and so on.

Therefore your team will be driving to another location to play Area Fest. Its important that your team knows how to get to the soccer fields location. You as the coach, assistant coach and / or team parent must coordinate with your team the location, game times and volunteer assistance with other regions.

What times are the games? What's the schedule?

Games are scheduled thru the day. Games are usually spaced in 30-60 min increments. So if you team plays at 9:30am, your next 2 games might be 10:30am and 12:00 noon. This all depends on the number of teams that are participating. I recommend that your team plan on spending most of the day participating which is usually about 4-6 hours. Some teams might start at 12pm noon, and finish by 4pm.

Does Peterson Park host a division for Area Fest?

We'd like host an Area Fest division, however we have challenges regarding our field space and we also need more volunteer support our organization. In order for us to participate in any Area Fest, the other Regions ask Peterson Park to participate in terms of volunteering at a field location for other support such as field setup, take down and field monitoring. Your team is required to bring 2 team parents to help out during the day.

Our Region will be designated to one or more locations to help setup, monitor and take down goal. Other Regions will be doing the same. All AYSO Regions are sharing the efforts to ensure that AYSO Section 6D Area Fest is a success.

We will play a full - hour game and be a total of 2-3 hours?

No. Your team will not be playing 3 hours of games. That is a lot of soccer for our youth in one day. Games are played 20-25 minutes and in addition, the games are smaller in size. For example a U10 Area Fest game may be 5 v 5 instead of 7 v 7. If you recall our Soccer Fest, the format is very similar in terms of size of the game, number of players on the field, and the length of game. These type of games are called "short-sided games".

My team doesn't know if they can play based on their families' schedules?

Yes. This is a tough decision. I would recommend that if you have 50%-75% of your team to commit, then your team should participate. It is important that your team does participate as our Area Fest organizers plan out the Area Fest schedule. Please let me know if you have 50% representation.

Coaches?

Yes. Since you are the coach of your team, you must attend the Area Fest representing your team. All coaches must be Safe Haven Certified and Age Division Certified at this level. If you have an assistant coach or team parent, please bring them as well.

At other events like Area Fest, coaches must be one age division certified higher than the division of participation. For example, if I took at U14 Team to participate in an AYSO tournament in NY, I must be "Advanced" Certified. This is one of the many reasons, why I ask that all coaches in AYSO Region 183 be certified and that planning in your certification is important as your youth advances into higher age divisions.

Why do we participate?

This is a great opportunity for you as a coach and player families to experience AYSO outside of our region. You'll see a greater community of youth soccer participating with many volunteers. Also, its fun playing soccer !

U08 NEW GoalsWe have new goals for U08 Fields. These new goals are somewhat easier to put together and is a different size. Last year's goals were approx U10 size which were too big. After the Coaches Meeting on 4/2, we demonstrated for all U08 Coaches that were present how to put up the goals. All U08 Coaches are to inform team parents please allow extra extra time to put up these new goals (30 minutes) at the start of game day ( 8:30am ). First games are a 9:00am.

U08 Rules Update Penalty Kicks
As reviewed by our Referee Administrator at the Coaches Meeting, Rachel O'Shea covered as to how the Penalty Kick (PK) was to be determined and how the restart is implemented in our U08 Division. The Referee Admin group has provided the following guidance:

If a Penalty kick is awarded during the course of normal play, the kick is taken from the center circle, the ball must be kicked forward and can not be touched by the player again until another player has touched it, the ball is in play when it is kicked and moves forward. The ball is considered live once it is put into play. All players must be behind the center line and outside of the center, apart from the designated kicker who will take the kick from the marker within the center. No player shall move past the center line until after the ball is kicked.

Scenario: Player takes penalty and kicks the ball forward. As the ball is traveling towards the goal a team mate (no encroachment) runs and kicks the ball into the goal. Result: Goal, restart kick off
Scenario: Player takes penalty, kicks the ball forward towards the goal, as it is about to go into the goal, defender runs into goal area (aka "no fly zone") and kicks the ball out of play. Result: Penalty kick for entering the goal area.
Scenario: Player takes the penalty, kicks the ball forward, while chasing after the ball, player kicks the ball again (no other player has touched it). Result: Direct Kick awarded to the defense at the spot of the re-touch.

Goal Setup / Take down Reminder:If you have the 9:00am games, inform your team parents earlier in the week to be available to help setup goals 30 minutes before start of games (8:30am).    For a quick refresher on how to setup goals click here:

Now all goals for each division are slightly different for setup but the same concepts apply! The New U08 Goals might be easier that the steps described in my blog.

Also, coaches if you know you have the last game of the day ~ remind your parents at the start of the game about take down duties.   This will at least give yourself time to provide a coaching moment with your team at the end while your team parents help take down the goals. Game Cards Lineup Policy and ReminderThis is a policy that all AYSO 183 Coaches must follow as part of procedure.

5 minutes before the start of a game, all coaches are to give to the referee a filled out lineup card with player names, team number, coach name and time/date of game.    Therefore for games, you as a coach should keep a separate lineup sheet for your own game rotation to ensure "Everyone Plays".
I recommend that on Thursday or Friday night before the game, you will out the lineup card for all players on your team. It does not matter if players are not present for the lineup card on game day.    In fact, if you have time just go ahead and fill out 10 lineup cards.    If you don't have any with you, just stop by Peterson Park South Fields or at Hollywood Park on game day and ask a Board Member for lineup cards.

[NEW!] Trophy Distribution Player Names Due 4/30 This year, AYSO 183 plans to add names to all trophies that will be distributed on Soccer Fest.    Therefore its is your responsibility as the coach to confirm the player's full name as it was registered with us at AYSO.    All coaches should have received an official roster sheet at the start of the season.     If there are name changes such as incorrect spellings, etc., please email me so that I can collect those and forward those on to our registration team.

If you do not send me any changes by April 30th, I will assume that your team roster is good on May 1st.

Our trophy coordinator will then start the process for getting those names with trophies.

Please complete this by April 30th 2011.

Player Evaluation 5/1 - 5/16
This is a heads up, that I'll remind all coaches thru by 5/14, all player evaluations will need to be emailed to AYSO 183 Player Evaluation Coordinator / Coach Josh Ermentrout at josh.ermentrout@gmail.com.   Basically between now and 5/7, you as a coach should have a good idea as to how each player approaches the game.

We are looking to start April 16th. This park district management will make the decision based on field conditions.

Spring 2011 Game Day/Practice Reminders:

Goal Setup: 45 minutes before game time (9 :00 AM)

All teams that have 9:00 AM starts, should arrive 45 minutes before game time. Coaches and Parents should be prepared to carry goal equipment from the field lockers to the field locations. We are also expected to setup the goals 10-15 minutes before game time. We want to be sure that the games start on time. Anytime that is lost as part of setup is lost for that one hour only. The next game starts at 10:00am.

Please be sure that upon setup of the goal, that all stakes are properly placed to hold the goal firmly down on the ground. The goal must be secure to the ground.
Player Forms: All coaches present must have player forms with them. Advice keep all player forms in a folder and in your own soccer coaches bag. Warning: AYSO Staff have been instructed to ask coaches if player forms are present. If not, we risk the chance of that game not being played. Seriously. Why? AYSO requires that these forms are present from a safety perspective such that if a player gets hurt, coaches and team parents have emergency contact and waiver information readily available. Important: I am really stressing this point and I take the displeasure with regards to micro-managing this reminder.
Game Cards: All coaches must have the Game Card (lineup card) filled out at the start of each game. Please spend the time to fill out these game cards (or) print outs. If you don't have cards, please go online to print out these cards. The referee will request these cards at the start of each game. Therefore it is best to have a backup card / clipboard sheet to keep track of your player rotations.

Why? These cards are used to help keep track of player rotations in our games. We'd like to be sure that players get to play at least 1/2 of the game and we recommend and try go get each player to play 3/4 of a game. It is important that all players in AYSO play as much as possible through the entire season.

Game Card Turn In: Typically a referee will ask for the game cards at the start of the game, at the end of game ~ or end of field duties, the referee will turn in the game cards to AYSO Staff.

Game Lineup Sheet (Your copy): Its important that you keep your own copy (spreadsheet) of your lineup. This will help you keep track of players during the course of play. This will also give you a perspective as to how you can manage your teams lineup for the next game. Some players don't make it all games, so you want to be sure that returning players from absent games get to play in most of the next game. (Advice)
Goal Take Down:

Teams that have the last game on the fields will have the responsibility to take down goals. The goals, nets, stakes, corner flags, and equipment are taken down and brought back to the field locker location. Some goals have goal bags associated, so please be sure that all equipment is placed in the bag.
Being Green

We have a lot of people watching our soccer games. We do have a increased chance of leaving bottles, wrappers, food, paper, and clothing behind. Please give a heads up to families that we should leave the park as green as possible and that all trash should be properly disposed into the garbage cans in the park.

Area Fest - Sunday June 5th 2011
AYSO 183 Teams in the U10, U12, and U14 divisions can participate in the AYSO Area Fest. The Area Fest comprises of AYSO's in the north and northwestern suburbs close to Chicago such as Skokie, Highland Park, Glenview, Morton Grove, Evanston and Chicago.

The date for Area Fest is June 5th 2011.

Area Fest basically comprises of short-sided games on smaller fields. The number of players on the field is 5 v 5 (U10) and 7 v 7 (U12). The length of games are shorter than the regulation time in AYSO.

Please contact me if there is interest by your team to join the Area Fest.

AYSO Region 183 will need volunteers to help setup at the different locations at Area Fest. Typically all parents who partipate as coaches, assistant coaches and team parents help with Area Fest setup at their team locations.

AYSO Region 183 Coaches
Thanks for volunteering with AYSO Region 183. As coaches for our youth, we are essential for integrating the important aspects of AYSO with our children's lives with positive coaching, good sportsmanship, player development and balanced teams.

As a requirement in AYSO 183, all coaches should be trained at the level for which they are coaching at.

Therefore if you are coaching at the U-08 level, the U08 Coach Certification is required. In addition, all volunteers in AYSO must compete Safe Haven certification.

Safe Haven certification is the base certification that is required for all courses in AYSO.

Planning for the future and Coach Training
Your child's birthdate is very relevant as to where you will be coaching the following AYSO Season.

Reminder, all AYSO Region 183 seasons follows the school season. The age-cut off date nation wide with all AYSO Regions across the country is 7/31 and does not follow any school board/system cutoff date.

The 7/31 date is used nationally across many soccer organizations in the United States.

Please note there is this year's 2010-2011 age-guide and 2011-2012 age guide listed.

So if your child's birthdate falls in U08 and next season your child falls into U10, you are then expected to have completed U10 Coach Certification.

We are now in the 2010-2011 Season (Fall 2010 thru Spring 2011). The next school year August 2011 is noted as 2011-2012 Season (Fall 2011 thru Spring 2012).

Balanced Teams, Good Sportsmanship and Everyone Plays

Coaches,

The above in bold is very much stressed by the us as coaches in AYSO. The importance of these 3 philosophies in AYSO is that as coaches we represent the ideals of AYSO when it comes encouraging enjoyment and fair play at the game session.

These ideals go for all players, coaches, referees, fans and volunteers at AYSO.

Balanced Teams

At the younger levels from U05, U06 and U08, at time coaches are participating on the field as in-game referees and/or helping to coach the players on the field. This is especially noted at the U05 and U06 level. At the U08 Level, there are times when the coach must become the referee on the field.

At all times, coaches must work together to ensure that teams are balanced on the field.

Before the game has started, please discuss the balanced team approach with the referee and the other coach at the field.

This discussion will set the framework as to how the balanced team approach is achieved by both teams.

The following would be examples to set as the framework for your game.

- Equal number players on the field per team

- Rotating recently "high scoring" players back to play different positions on the field.

- If team cannot field a team or is short players, we encourage teams to be remixed or player(s) loaned.

Everyone Plays

At U05, U06, and U08 Levels, players on both teams should be encouraged to work together during the training sessions or practices. As our youth players later graduate to upper divisions, eventually these players will be teammates since we move from 4 v 4 all the way thru 11 v 11.

At our games, if a team is short players and the other has more than enough. The teams can be remixed or players can be loaned to the team. This can be done provided that "soccer" pinnies are available.

Good Sportsmanship

At all levels, coaches on both teams usually are paired up together in the "coaching" box area. Should coaches be on the field (as in U05 and U06), both coaches are required to encourage "fair play" for all players. The most important ideal is to ensure that players "play" the game. Let them play!

Too much coaching with all players can sway the ideals of good sportsmanship to that of being perceived as poor sportsmanship. Coaches should work together on continue to "say positive remarks" and not encourage decision making that can sway a player not to achieve the objective of the specific play, game or scoring chances.

At the U05, U06 and U08 levels ~ the ideals of the short-sided game is to encourage as guidance "dribbling" and "passing" for the attacking principles while "deny" and "delay" are the defending principles. Although scoring is important, coaches will need to consider that team improvements from training to the short-sided game sessions that follow the attacking/defending principles are "long term gains". Short terms gains such as "immediate goal scoring" are nice but are short lived in player development and experience. You will see the benefits "long term" with player development as oppose to "winning the game" for that day.

Remember "Let them play!"

Uniform Update
Uniform Pickup:
Sept 10th Friday 6pm-9pm.

Uniform Pickup by Whom:
Uniforms can only be picked up by a volunteer coach or volunteer team parent. Basically those volunteers
who have been in contact with the coaching admin and regional support staff.

Our volunteers will be busy handing out the uniforms boxes and team packets. Please be patient as there
will be a line of coaches.

5730 N. Virginia, Chicago IL

This location was the same location where we held the preseason coach meeting but not at the park.
You are parking in a neighborhood area. One of our volunteers have graciously is hosting the
distribution of uniforms.

Virginia is a one way street. No parking in the alleys. We are only to park on Virginia.

Parking Instructions:
Please park on the street on Virginia Ave. Walk to 5730 N. Virginia and there will be an AYSO Sign.
Walk into the back yard and there will be a garage. We'll be at this location for pickup of the uniforms.

Uniform Assignment to Player
When you get home, please first review the uniform roster list.

As part of your coach packet there is a uniform roster list. Each player has an assigned uniform size by request.

The request was done either online or in-person. At the time of registration the uniform size was validated by the uniform volunteer and checked off when the player sized themselves at the table.

Please be sure that the player has the correct uniform size as this was a player/parent decision.

You will need to double check the player form with "circle" uniform size written in pen. The size was also signed
at registration.

Quick and Easy Distribution (some work involved)
You should be ready by night's end to have packaged up the player's uniform. Hint: Use a bag with player's name written on masking tape that is taped to the bag. This will make your distribution of the player uniform quick and easy.

Backup Uniforms
Just in case, all players should bring a white t-shirt and and a dark t-shirt (brown, black, dark blue, dark red, etc.).
If in the event both teams at the game do not have uniforms, a team can wear the white t-shirt while the other team wears the darker shirt. Soccer or athletic shorts that is dark should be worn. Soccer Socks as well.

Soccer Equipment
Remind your players to wear soccer cleats and have shinguards on. Soccer socks will need to cover the shinguards. This is a must! Our referees will check players at the start of the game.

Jewelry or watches should not be worn.

Game Day Distribution
Probably not ideal. 30 minutes before game time, if this is the only time you will need to distribute the uniforms then.

Schedule Update:
The schedule is posted at http://www.ayso183.org. The most important date on the schedule is 9/11.
The field codes are listed below.

1. At http://www.ayso183.org look for "Regular Season Schedules" on the left hand side.
2. You'll be at the Schedule Page.
3. Click on the "Age Division Schedule"
4. Review the schedule. NOTE! Sometimes times are not in order!
5. Look at the times carefully and field code.
6. To change divisions go back to "Peterson Park AYSO' at the top of the "green table header".
7. To Print use the "Printable Version" on the right hand side.

Team Number (QUIZ!)
Remind your team of the TEAM NUMBER. (ie. U35B-01 ie Men's National Team)
Everyone must remember the Team Number as this is essential to finding your schedule.
I'm not kidding about having a quiz. Knowing the number will be important to know
for Picture Days, Soccer Fest, and of course "The Schedule".

Coach Sideline:
Coaches of both teams are to be on one side of the field with players (bench) while parents / family and friends
on the other side. No one is to be a fan next to the goal. All fans are to be on the fan sideline of the field.

Players should bring water bottle with them to the coach/player side of the field.

Your cooperation will help the referee during the game.

Both coaches are to work together and encourage the players to play the game!

Goals and Equipment Setup and Take down.
All parents are expected to chip in and help with goal setup and goal take down.
If team has first game of the day, parents are to arrive 30-45 minutes before game and preform goal setup.

Last game schedule, remind parents at start of game and end of game to help take down, carry and store equipment (goals, nets, flags, etc).

Basic Instructions for Goal Setup
1. Note all goals are different sizes for U08, U10, and U12/U14 but basic principle applies!
2. Pickup Goal Bag (or) Goal equipment from storage location to field.
2a. Get Volunteers to help.
2b. Corner Flags too!

3. Goal Setup: Take out equipment, poles and net.
4. Layout frame on ground to match up (poles with color tape).
5. Find Crossbar(s) and connect together. Cross bars are for top across and bottom across.
6. Find Sidebars
7. Lay bars back down.
8. Take net and spread out net.
9. Look for top of net, usually taped ends.
10. Take Crossbar (top) and put crossbar thru top of net every other square.
11. Follow same for Side bars.
12. Connect Sidebars with Top Crossbar.
13. Connect Sidebars with Bottom Cross bar.
14. Secure Net in place around bars.
15. Place goal on ground.
16. Look in bag for ground stakes and secure goal.
17. Game is not started until goal is secure and staked! Referee also checks.
18. Rain out ?!

Lineup Cards and Team Rotation List (2 copies)
Coaches are required to have a lineup card at the start of the game. Make 2 copies or a handy spreadsheet for yourself. Referee will ask for Lineup Card at the start of the game. Please hand lineup card to referee. Use your own notes for rotation of players. Remember, game is divided in 4 quarters (parts) and every player is guaranteed to play 2 quarters ( one-half of the game ) to 3 quarters of a game before anyone can play a full game (4 quarters).

Coaches, I encourage you to keep a history of players playing time from week to week. Ensure over the course of the season, that everyone gets to play. Yes, someone may be sick during the week or missed the previous game. Ensure that they play upfront in the game and not resting.

Player Forms at Games
The team parent or coach must have the team player forms present at all games! Our staff will be performing random spot checks from time to time. Why? From a safety perspective there is contact information listed so that if in an event of an emergency the form is readily available to use. If you don't have the forms, you run the risk of the team not playing on game day.

If you as a coach will not be present, the forms must be present with a team parent or an assistant coach. Player forms are a must. Veteran coaches now that I sound like a broken record.... This is the coach/team parent responsibility that player forms are present.

It important to have parents and fans read the AYSO Parent Pledge. I would print out 10-15 copies
and hand this out at games. The first game is good to do. Practice early in the season are good as well.

Sometimes we have visitors who don't know what AYSO is about and they become very involved with the game.
I encourage everyone to take part in Good Sportsmanship and Positive Coaching.

Coach Clinic Sunday Sept 12th Noon ( 1 hour )
I will be holding a Coach Clinic for 1 hour at noon this Sunday at the Peterson Park South Fields (next the field house). The goal of the coach clinic will be to go over the organizational skills for a coach with regards to team practices, managing the game, and interacting with the players with regards to player development. Please bring your AYSO coach manual, notepad and pen. We also invite your son or daughter to participate in a basic practice session for demonstration.

I'll need to have a head count so that I know who will be attending. Please email me by 10am Sunday 9/12.

This clinic is not an AYSO certification class but more of a quick "jump start" or "refresher" for our coaches.

First Aid Kit and Extra water/ice
If you have a first aid kit, please make this as part of your coaching kit. Also extra water bottles and/or ice will help hydrate yourself and players.

Rain Out
Keep an eye on weather. We do play in the rain, however the first crack of thunder or lightning, games are then shutdown. The referee administration decides to call off or to resume games. Historically, most decisions are that games are called off for the entire day with regards to field safety and bad weather.

If it rains during the work week (heavy) and fields are not playable by checking Friday or Saturday morning, games are cancelled.

An email is sent out to all coaches and a post is made to the ayso183.org web site and/or blog site.

AYSO 9/4 and 9/5 Coach Certification in Evanston U06, U08, and U10

06, U08 and U10 Coaches:

For those of you who are working on Safe Haven to be completed this week or have recently completed the Online Safe Haven Training, you are now welcome to enroll in any one or more of these classes with our AYSO neighbor in Evanston this Labor Day weekend 9/4 and 9/5.

Note: If you do intend on taking a course, please be sure that you complete the online safe haven training by Thursday night 9/2 Our instructor(s) will be checking if you have completed this course before you enroll into this class.

I realize that this is a holiday weekend, and there will be more times and locations throughout the year in the soccer off-season. In addition as a reminder the online training is available to get you up to speed.

In order to enroll, you'll have to go to the EAYSO web site at http://www.eayso.org and use your login to register for a course. (This is required and a preregistration step).

The schedule are as follows:

9/4 Saturday
U06: 9:00am-11:30am
U08: 1:00pm-4:00pm

9/5
U10: 9:00am-12:00pm (noon)

Location: The in-person course training is located at James Park at the Levy Center. James Park is located at Oakton / Dodge. Assuming that you would drive north on Dodge, there is a street entrance the Levy Center which is just after the CTA/Yellow Line, turn west into the parking lot. The address is 300 Dodge, Evanston Ave.

As always, I recommend that you take a course in-person so that you can get a true feel of coaching from our instructors and learn from experiences of others first hand.

Preseason Meeting 8/28

We have a 8/28 9am-11am Preseason Meeting at Legion Park. The meeting will start at 9am. We will actually sit in the park area and then go over the season. After the meeting the plan is to hand out the rosters and uniform. Parking will be difficult so you'll need to park in the streets in the area which maybe 1, 2, or 3 blocks away. No Parking in the alleys or streets marked with parking restrictions and limitations. Please follow parking signs. Also, please bring a lawn chair and there are no bathroom facilities in the park area.

Legion Park is between Peterson Ave / Bryn Mawr Ave on the east side of the Chicago River (North Branch). The location is at 5730 N Virginia Ave but we will be having the meeting on the park side of this address.

Newsletter

1. Game Schedule Changes for 5/15 thru 6/5
- Game Schedule has been finalized thru 6/5 as of Wed 5/5. You may now refer to the ayso183.org for the latest game schedule.

2. Game Day Reminders for Parents & Coaches
- Parents are to be on the touch lines (long sidelines) and NOT next to the goal keeper area.
- Parents/Spectators are to be at least 1 yard off of the touch line.
- Pets are to be at least 3-4 yards or more from the entire soccer field area.
- Parents/Spectators are to cheer positively. (yeah! good job! keep it up!)
- Negative comments such as - (hey! not good! terrible! you forgot! look at where you are?! what are you doing?!) are frowned upon.
- Let the players PLAY! Most children playing on the field only and "selectively" hear a few words. Honestly, will any player have a
- conversation with you while they are playing the game? There is lots of action going on.

- Coaches, as a good practice. Coaches on both teams are actually a coaching team at the game.
- 0) Please note that there is a team side and a spectator side.
- 1) Stay on the same side and opposite of spectators.
- 2) Inform your players to bring water bottles with them on team side.
- 3) Coaches are to work as teammates not be adversaries.
- 4) You will find that playing at higher age divisions and playing other AYSO regions that this is the general practice.

Soccer Fest - June 12th
Mark your Calendars. June 12th is our last day of Soccer. This day is our "Soccer Fest".

What is "Soccer Fest'?
Soccer Fest is a day where your soccer team plays 3 20-min short games of soccer.
In addition, all teams are playing soccer on the same day at the same location. As a single region, all
AYSO soccer families come together as one to enjoy our year of soccer.

Area Fest - June 6th
What is "Area Fest?"
The Area Fest is a region wide event at multiple park locations in the north/west suburbs such as
Skokie, Highland Park, Morton Grove, etc. Each park location will host a division. (ie. all U10 Boys at one park location).

For those certified coaches that are interested in taking a team to play at Area Fest on Sunday June 6th.
AYSO 183 has invites to play other AYSO regions for 1 team in each division listed here

U10 Boys Team

U14 Girls Team

All coaches at these games must be safe haven certified and also have certification at the age level that they are coaching in.
Coaches who are interested please let me know.

As participants at the Area Fest, AYSO Region 183 also needs team parents or assistant coaches to help setup and close out
the Area Fest locations. All AYSO Regions in the area that participates all have volunteer team parents that help out.
Let us show the other regions that our parents do support the AYSO with volunteering.

Games are short-sided games and not full-length games. Games are:
- 7 v 7 (including goal keeper)
- 25 minute game (3 games total)
- Team size up to 12, 7 players on the field max

A good first step is to take a poll of your team to see if there is interest. If you do you have your team ready, please let me know.
I would like to get responses by next Monday May 17th.

New Fall 2010 / Spring 2011 Registration

Reminder: Please send anyone who is interested on registering with AYSO 183 to visit the staff table on Game Days Saturday

from 9am -1pm at the Peterson Park South Field location (near the field house at the picnic tables).

We are still taking registration for Fall 2010/Spring 2011 until June 5th. There will be a wait list after June 5th.

Coaching Next Season - Fall 2010 / Spring 2011

If you are interested in continuing coaching in AYSO 183 and watching your children grow and develop with the game of soccer, you will need to sign up again for next year. Some coaches already have informed me. Not all coaches have informed me. I do need your response. All returning coaches must fill out a new volunteer registration form. Reminder: For each year that you coach, a new volunteer registration form is required.

Coach Training

If you child is moving up into the next age division, you will need to have coach certification training too. There will be training this summer for all age divisions. I encourage you too keep an eye out for the training schedule. Almost all training sessions occur on weekends. A few pointers to keep your scheduling in mind:

U06 thru U10 are about 3-4 hours of training for each course.

U12 is about 5 hours

U14/Intermediate: 2 Days (approx 6-8 hour each day Sat and Sun)

U16/U19/Advanced: 2.5 Days ( 3 hour Friday night, 6-8 for Sat and Sun each)

National Coach Requirements

All current U05 and U06 Coaches who are coaching in U06 next year are now required to complete U06 Certification Training starting on Aug 1, 2010.

Please note that this is a national requirement and AYSO 183 is now required to follow this. In coming years, expectations are that all coaches be certified at that level before a team is assigned. The next year in 2011, expect that U06 and U08 will be requirements.

By the way, all AYSO 183 Coaches can take the U06 Online Training. This is a new online training session that take approximately 1 hour to complete.

To all U05/U06 Coaches, you are welcome to take the U06 Online Training before July 1st. I encourage you to take the online training.

Safe Haven Update
I want to thank all coaches this year for completing Safe Haven Certification. We are almost 100%!

Here is an update as we are still in process of completing the changes to the schedule.

1. Saturday May 8th is final. Changes made to the schedule are posted to the AYSO 183 Web Site at Regular Season Schedules.
Please inform your teams with regards to updates of schedule.

2. Other dates May 15th, May 22nd and June 5th are still in flux. Please be sure that your families are aware of this that the later dates are not final. We are tweaking the schedule and I hope to have that portion of the schedule finalized.

Schedule Notification Changes

We have game schedule changes starting 5/8 thru 6/5 due to the following reasons:

- coaches being double booked at the same time for multiple teams or
- where games are played back-to-back weekends with the same teams or
- by following our balanced team principles in AYSO

Divisions
The divisions that have changes starting on 5/8 are:

U06 Coed (Boys and Girls)
U10 Boys
U10 Girls
U12 Boys

The changes have not been updated to the schedule as Sunday 5/2, as I am working with the scheduler.
Therefore do not announce the times yet.

Impact

The schedule is planned to be updated by Tuesday 5/4 so that you are prepared to inform your players and parents.
Changes may also impact families who have children on different teams

Please wait until I give the go ahead to announce the changes to the schedule.
I will also contact each coach who is impacted with these changes.

Quick Reminder Checklist for Saturday's games

On Friday
[ ] 1. Prepare lineup cards for referee
[ ] 2. Make backup lineup sheet for yourself

There will be spot checks at the games.
AYSO Staff will be asking so if you don't have it, we run the risk of not playing games.
Please bring player forms with you at games. If you are not present, you are responsible
to ensure that player forms are held by assistant coach or team parent.

[ ] 5. Email / Contact Parents for Goal Setup 45 minutes before 1st game.
8:15am for 9am games
We all haven't setup goals since Fall. So some of us coaches will have to relearn goal setup.
Use the extra time to setup the goals.

[ ] 6. Email / Contact Parents for Game Time, Game Field Location and Team Number!

[ ] 7. Remind Families - players must wear AYSO uniform with proper equipment (soccer shoes, socks and shinguards)
No football or baseball shoes! The cleats for those shoes are dangerous for soccer.
Bring water bottles to keep cool and hydrated.

[ ] 8. Bring extra different colors T-Shirt or goalie shirt

[ ] 9. Bring correct size Soccer Ball for your team games.
Size 3 - U5, U6 and U8
Size 4 - U10, U12
Size 5 - U14 and up

[ ] 10. Last games of the day, coaches check your schedules. If your teams are the last teams on the field, please remind
parents to take down goals and equipment. Store in goal bags and/or return to goal lockup.

[ ] 11. Lastly, let's keep our parks green. Pickup any trash and and dispose properly.

Player Evaluation Basic Approach

Basic Evaluation
As a basic approach for the end of the fall season, we as coaches will need to do team / player evaluations. Over the past years, I've asked for player evaluations by the end of the spring season, however as we all know that as we approach the summer, we tend to get very busy such as end of school, vacations, etc, etc.

Our regional staff spend hours each season assigning players to fair and balanced teams. But without our coaches best help, it can be next to impossible to achieve. By providing player evaluations, the team assignment process will help form balanced teams for the Fall 2011/Spring 2012 seasons.

I'd like to keep the player evaluation as simple as possible.

Assign a value of 3, 2 and 1 to each player.
3 indicates a player who demonstrates technical skills tactical soccer presence on the field and is a team player.
2 indicates a player who embodies a "3" and meets any 2 or more of those categories.

1 indicates a player who who meets any one or more of those categories but needs improvement.

You will need to create a bell curve for your team. In other words, you should have few 3's and 1's and many 2s.

As a general rule, all of our players are growing physically and mentally at different rates so this evaluation value is meant to be as guide for our region.

Goal Setup - Easy Steps

Basic Instructions for Goal Setup

1. Note all goals are different sizes for U08, U10, and U12/U14 but basic principle applies!

2. Pickup Goal Bag (or) Goal equipment from storage location to field.

2a. Get Volunteers to help.

2b. Corner Flags too!

3. Goal Setup: Take out equipment, poles and net.

4. Layout frame on ground to match up (poles with color tape).

5. Find Crossbar(s) and connect together. Cross bars are for top across and bottom across.

6. Find Sidebars

7. Lay bars back down.

8. Take net and spread out net.

9. Look for top of net, usually taped ends.

10. Take Crossbar (top) and put crossbar thru top of net every other square.

11. Follow same for Side bars.

12. Connect Sidebars with Top Crossbar.

13. Connect Sidebars with Bottom Cross bar.

14. Secure Net in place around bars.

15. Place goal on ground.

16. Look in bag for ground stakes and secure goal.

17. Game is not started until goal is secure and staked! Referee also checks.

18. Rain out ?!

4/10 Cancel Games

April 10th 2010 Games 'Week 1' is canceled. Our web site has been posted with the notification of cancel at our web site ... http://www.ayso183.org

Due to the poor field conditions at Peterson and Hollywood Park, the park district management has informed us that we won't be able to use the fields for April 10th.

Therefore our 1st week of the AYSO 2010 Spring Season is canceled. We will resume the season with the 2nd week on April 17th 2010. Please start the season with 'Week 2' times. Week 1 times are NOT to be used at all. We won't be making up for Week 1.

Referee Training:

If you'd like to become a referee or know of someone who does want to volunteer as a referee

we have training on Saturday April 10th, 2010 too.

For example, volunteers who can't commit time as a coach but still would like to participate with AYSO - being a referee is another great position to be involved with AYSO 183.

Soccer Fest 6/12

Please mark down in your team's schedule that we will be having Soccer Fest on Sat. June 12th.

Inform your players that this day is our end of the year celebration of Soccer at Peterson Park South Fields. Essentially its a day of celebration with short-side soccer games, trophies and a picnic.

The schedule is posted online at http://www.ayso183.org.

Referee Update
Our AYSO Referee volunteers are in a bit of crunch this coming Saturday 4/10 as a few of our veteran referees are instructors and will be training new volunteer AYSO Referees this Saturday as well. Therefore we'll be running short of volunteer referees for this one day. The AYSO Staff asks that all coaches and parents be patient as referees will be doing the best they can to ensure that a game is staffed by a referee.

If a referee is not present at the start of the game time, I ask that a coach be prepared to referee the game should a referee not be present.

A few pointers, please check the following for safety:

1. Players Uniform (neatly dressed with proper color socks)
2. Equipment (shinguard, soccer shoes)
3. No watches or jewelry worn.
4. Uniform is pulled over any other clothing for warmth (ie. sweat pants, sweat shirt etc.)

For more information on Referee training, see the email below. The training is from 9am-4:45pm. Any volunteer with AYSO 183 can be trained to be a referee.
If for some reason the fields are not playable on 4/10, you are welcome to take this training class. You'll need to register online for this class.
Please email the Referee Admin with regards to attending the class.

If you do know of any parents that are interested in volunteering as a referee. There are different responsibilities for being a referee as opposed to a coach.
For example, one does not need to be involved with team/player management but as instead be a good manager of the game for players, coaches and spectators.
The time commitment for being a referee is different than a coach.

We never have enough referees. I encourage you to pass the word on that any volunteer is interested in becoming a referee.

Player Forms, Accident Form, Lineup Card
Some reminders:

1. Player Forms:
Please be sure that you have all of your team's player forms in your hands on Saturday Game Day.
If you don't have these papers, you run the risk of a game not played. This is requirement by our AYSO National organization and board.
Hint: Get those forms and put these in your soccer coaches bag/folder.

** AYSO Staff will be doing spot checks every week for player forms. **
** If you are not available that weekend, those forms must be present with a team parent or assistant coach **

2. Accident Forms:
Please print out 2-3 or more of the following form.

We'd like to be sure that you put copies of this form in your soccer folder/bag. I also welcome that you pass a copy of this form
to other coaches who might not have this form.

The purpose of this form is that should an injury happen on the field, the AYSO Staff would like to be sure that it documented.
Upon completion of the document should an event occur, please bring the form to the AYSO Staff Picnic Table on game days at the
Peterson Park South Fields.

3. Game Card
This week, please be sure that you fill out the game card with your player's names. This card will be turned into the referee.
So therefore, if you need to keep track of players time on the field, I would suggest that you keep a separate spreadsheet.

2010 Regular Season Schedule
In order for you to see your schedule, please follow these steps:

1. At the Regular Season Schedule page, you will see a list of all of the divisions.
2. Choose your Division.
3. At the Division Schedule page, you will see by week all games played in your division.
4. Click on your team number.
5. Note: There will be a commercial page displayed. Click on "No Thanks" and the link will take your team schedule.
6. Your Team Schedule is listed.

Note: Should your print out the entire division schedule, please note specifically the times. Based on the schedule ordering, sometimes the times are not listed in sequential order for all teams. Most schedules are in sequential order.

April 10th Start Date until further notice (4/10 or 4/17)
We intend to start on Saturday April 10th. If the park district management informs us that we can't play on April 10th due to field conditions or weather, we'll start the schedule that is listed on for Saturday April 17th. The games for April 10th are not played at all.

Goal Setup
Coaches, if your teams have first games at 9am. Please be sure that you have your parents show 45 minutes (8:15am) earlier to help setup goals. It has been awhile for a few of us regarding goal setup, therefore we'll need the extra time when putting the goals together. Again, we need to start our games on time so that we don't lose time in the 1st hour. The 2nd game starts immediately at the top of the hour (10am).

Goal Take Down
Coaches, check if your team has the last game for the day on that field. If you are the last teams, on the field please be sure that you ask parents to help take down and return equipment to the field lockers and properly stowed away.

Coaches,

The Picture Day Schedule is set for this Saturday 10/17.

Please look for your team number.
All teams are scheduled to go take pictures before their games are played.
Most teams have at least 1 hour prior to start of the game.
Coaches if you have the envelope that was handed out to you this past Saturday, please bring that envelope.
If you don't have it the Picture Staff will have a team envelope for you.

The Picture Day Location is at the Peterson Park South Fields. Entrance to the park is at Adrmore and Central Park Ave.

Hints

Please be sure that your team families plan ahead and arrive 15 minutes before assigned picture time.
Parking is available along Central Park Ave on the right side (park side) of the street from Peterson down to Bryn Mawr
If players don't have the picture handout, the Picture Day staff will be handing out envelopes to help out for ordering
All coaches/teams should know the team number by now.

Goal Setup: Teams with 9am and 10am start times. please send your team parents to help setup goals. Some of the 10am teams are scheduled to have pictures taken around 8:30am. So a few extra hands to help setup is appreciated when setting up goals.

Practices (Basic Format)

Here is a basic practice plan:

0-10 min: Basic Warm up with stretching and exercises.

11-20 min: As players arrive - in a confied small space get the players to dribble the ball on thier own. (All players must bring a ball ! ) This is very important to ensure that players feel comfortable with the ball.

21-30 min: In pairs, players work together by passing the ball between each other. Players can focus by passing with one foot only, or passing thru cones. Player can move around get used to distance and space when passing. The coach should watch carefully how passes are completed between players.

31-40 min: Use one of those short-sided drill games found on the web here. Only use 1 or 2 of them in this area of time for your practice. The groups of players should be no more than 3-4 per group. Such as a 2 v 2 drill with defending and attacking the ball.

41-60 min: The last 20 minutes of your practice is a scrimage game. The scrimmage game should not be more than 4 v 4. If you have more than 8 players at practice, you can have them practice on the side and rotate them. Again, I am encouraging the players to get as many touches during the whole hour of practicing.

During the scrimage game, coaches can "freeze" the game and show and demonstrate coaching points such as positioning, rules of the game, or even develop awareness of a situation. The "coaching point" should be brief. Don't freeze the game too often but stick with a theme. Let the kids play.
